Dinagat Island

The Ride That Tested Us

A major destination that challenged both rider and motorcycle.

Across the Sea: Miya’s Adventure in Dinagat Island

Surigao City to Dinagat Island, Philippines

Every journey has a story, but some adventures stay with you because of the things you never expected to experience. My ride to Dinagat Island was one of those journeys a trip filled with adventure, freedom, and a connection to a place that meant more to me than just another destination on the map.

It all began in Surigao City, with Miya ready for another journey. This time, we weren't just riding to another town or exploring a new road. We had to cross the sea to reach Dinagat Island.

that was where the real adventure began.

Unlike a typical trip where you can simply ride your motorcycle onto a Ro-Ro ferry, boarding the boat to Dinagat was a different experience. There was no Ro-Ro ferry for us to use. Instead, there was a large boat called a lancha, and getting Miya aboard meant crossing a narrow bridge connecting the boulevard platform to the boat.

Looking at that narrow passage, I knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary ride.

Bringing a motorcycle onto a boat that way was challenging, but it was also the kind of experience that made the journey unforgettable. It wasn't just about getting Miya to the other side. It was about facing something unfamiliar and finding a way to make the journey happen.

That moment remains one of my strongest memories of Dinagat Island. Miya and I had crossed many roads together, but now we were crossing the sea. It was a different kind of adventure, one that reminded me that traveling by motorcycle sometimes means dealing with challenges beyond the road itself.

After arriving on the island, the rain came pouring down heavily.

The sky opened up, and the rain made an already adventurous journey feel even more intense. It was one of those moments when the trip didn't go exactly as you might imagine, but somehow, the unexpected became part of what made it special.

For me, adventure has never meant that everything must go smoothly. Sometimes, it's the difficult and unpredictable moments that turn an ordinary trip into a story worth remembering.

When life throws something at you, don't surrender. Take it, face it, learn from it, and keep moving.

From there, I explored Dinagat Island over several days, traveling all the way to Loreto and spending time in Tubajon, my mother's hometown the place where she was born.

made this journey especially meaningful.

Dinagat wasn't simply another island for me to visit. It was also a place connected to my family's story, a place tied to my mother's beginnings. As I explored the island, I was discovering new roads and places while also visiting a place that held a personal connection to my roots.

There is something special about traveling somewhere you have a connection to, even when you're seeing it through your own eyes for the first time as an adventurer. The roads become more than routes on a map, and the destination becomes more than a place to check off a list.

For days, I continued exploring the island with Miya, embracing the freedom of the journey and the feeling of being somewhere new. The difficult boat crossing, the heavy rain, and the roads that carried us across Dinagat all became part of the experience.

Looking back, I will never forget that narrow bridge leading to the lancha. It was a small crossing in distance, but it represented something much bigger in my journey. Before I could explore the island, I had to take that first step or, in this case, guide Miya across that bridge.

Sometimes, the beginning of an adventure is the most intimidating part. You can spend time imagining what lies ahead, but you never truly know what the experience will be until you commit to it.

My journey to Dinagat Island reminded me that freedom isn't just about riding wherever the road takes you. It's also about being willing to try something unfamiliar, embracing the unexpected, and discovering the stories that wait beyond your comfort zone.

And this time, the adventure carried a deeper meaning. I explored an island connected to my mother's hometown, crossed the sea with Miya in a way I'll never forget, and experienced the kind of unpredictable journey that makes motorcycle travel feel alive.

The road doesn't always begin on land, and an adventure doesn't always begin with certainty. Sometimes, it begins with a narrow bridge, a boat waiting on the other side, and the courage to cross.

“Some adventures begin on a road, others begin with a narrow bridge across the sea. In Dinagat, Miya and I found more than a new destination we found freedom, unexpected memories, and a connection to where my mother's story began.”
